Conscious Practices & Changes in your Brain

Mark Robert Waldman

Mark Robert Waldman is a therapist and an Associate Fellow at the Center for Spirituality and the Mind, University of Pennsylvania, where he currently conducts research with Andrew Newberg, MD, on the neurological correlates of beliefs, morality, compassion, meditation, religious experiences, and spiritual practices.

Time magazine, Newsweek: Mark and Andrew are the world’s leading experts on Spirituality and The Brain

You can check his website for a lot more about him and his other books and endeavors:

www.markrobertwaldman.com

Coauthor of a monthly column “Science and Spirituality” in the Science of Mind magazine.
This is a great magazine for inspiration and information about Spiritual Science. It has daily guides with quotes, a story and your daily affirmation.

Newberg's and Waldman's research into the neuropsychology of Nuns, Buddhists, Pentecostals, and atheists provides the first model for explaining why certain beliefs - be they political, romantic, religious, or emotional - take on a semblance of reality that is so strong that the brain has no choice but to perceive those beliefs as real.  If you meditate or obsess on anger, then the world becomes a hostile environment.  But if you intensely focus on compassion, kindness, and trust, then the world becomes a gift, and your ability to cope with the stresses of life increase dramatically and become a physiological part of your brain.  What you believe not only affects your health, it also changes your perception of the world.

Their bestselling book is How God Changes Your Brain: Breakthrough Findings By a Leading Neuroscientist. According to Time, Newsweek, and the Washington Post, Mark and Andy are the world's leading experts on spirituality and the brain and in this book, they use their state-of-the art brain-scan technology and research surveys to document how different forms of spiritual practice, secular meditation, intensive prayer, and positive affirmations change the function and structure of the brain. They show how these changes improve memory, cognition, and compassion while simultaneously suppressing activity in those parts of the brain that generate stress, anxiety, depression, and anger.

“Authors Newberg and Waldman have written a self-help field guide to the health benefits of spirituality. Just minutes of daily meditation can slow the aging process, build intimacy with family and friends and provide broader rewards even for nonbelievers. It appears that positive thinking is one of the many names of God.”

As many of you know I am the certified Silva Method Instructor in the Austin and San Antonio Metroplexes. Website for those services. Mark was the keynote speaker for Silva International’s Convention which was in Austin, August 2009. [Note: He and Gregg Braden will be at the international convention this year which will be in August in Houston.]

As a result of attending our powwow for the global teachers he is working with Silva International to bring in some of the neuroscience discoveries into our brain-based teaching that Silva has been doing for decades. This brain-based strategy to managing your thoughts is quite successful. Effectiveness would explain why we are the most globally established mind development system. Presented with Lamar Irwin, RScP, CSMI

Additional
information
about
Mark Waldman
is above
along with a downloadable flyer.

It takes only 5 steps to transform your thoughts and release your condition to your Divine Authority. You will learn these 5 steps while discovering the changes that occur in your brain as you are doing them. In addition Mark will count down the best techniques that science shows help to maintain a healthy brain. Smile. Relax. Yawn. Eat less. Exercise. Have intense intellectual stimulation. Compassionately Communicate with Others. and the best way to exercise your brain? Faith, Optimism and Hope. Have faith in yourself, and in others, as you follow your deepest, positive values. And never, never, give up hope in yourself, your God and humanity.

Note for those familiar with the Science of Mind, aka Religious Science, now called United Centers for Spiritual Living. Lamar Irwin, RScP is a Science of Mind trained practitioner. Lamar will present how to do the 5 steps of a Spiritual Mind Treatment, a highly effective affirmative prayer, and Mark will explain what is happening in the brain during each step.
Please Note: These 5 steps may come from a Spiritual Philosophy AND these can be applied in any religious belief.

Compassionate Communication, Caregiving, and Your Brain

It only takes 60 seconds to transform any conversation, with nearly anyone and in virtually any situation, into an experience that will rapidly generate inner peace, social empathy and cooperative dialogue. The lecture presents a core element in Mark and Andy’s current research, which includes programs that have been recently designed and taught to adults, students, hospital staff, therapists, patients, attorneys and conflict-resolution mediators, and to corporate executives and administrators.

Saturday May 1, 6:30-7:`15 $25 or $20 prepaid
Unity Center, 9603 Dessau Road, Austin

Food, Meditation, and Your Brain

In conjunction with leading researchers at universities around the country, Mark has designed one of the most effective strategies for losing weight and undermining a variety of eating disorders. You’ll learn how to retrain your brain to stay committed to a healthy diet and eating program, and you’ll learn how to lose weight safely, mindfully, and permanently. Using three university-tested programs and cutting-edge research on the neuroscience of weight-loss, you will interrupt destructive eating behaviors, learn how to cope with cravings, eliminate guilt, feel satisfied eating less, reduce anxiety and stress and related health problems. This is also the first program to integrate the newest findings in brain research. The key to this program lies in a simple and surprising step that when taken neurologically changes  your relationship to food. Self esteem improves and you literally train your brain to stay committed to your personalized weight management program.

Saturday May 1, 7:30—9:00 $25 or $20 prepaid
Unity Center, 9603 Dessau Road, Austin

The Most Important Question in the World

Is there a single question that people can ask of themselves that will transform their lives and their interactions with others, even to the point of generating more ethical business practices? Yes! The question is simple, self-evident, and fundamental to each person’s life. Everyone can answer it in less than 20 seconds, and yet it turns out to be one of the least asked questions in the world. In fact, if you did a Google search of this five-word question, it appears less than five times! And if you search for all the variations of the question, you’ll come up with less than 40 hits. This finding has caused one of the top ten business colleges in America to make this question – and the one-minute meditation that Mark has built around it – a core-teaching exercise in their executive training program. It is also a question, that when answered, resonates to the core values of nearly every religious tradition in the world.
